Purpose
Reading logs are a form of graphic organizer that helps to focus student thinking on making connections to the text, inferring information based on what is known about the reading, activating prior knowledge, repairing understanding, and visualizing aspects of the text.
Procedures
A designated Reading Log that is created by the teacher to adhere to specific aspects of the text to be targeted can be used for any type of reading that students are taking part in within the classroom. While students read, they fill out the log sheet, which forces them to think critically about the content at hand. In doing this, students are much more actively engaged in the text than they would be if simply reading the material to gain understanding. This can be used in a classroom reading situation when students are reading a single, required text or during independent reading, in which case they can document the section of the text covered during the designated reading time.

The links below provide an example of a Reading Log that can be used as a supplement to student reading to help focus their understanding of the text.
