Purpose
Using Post-It notes while reading helps students to monitor their own comprehension as they make their way through the text, while staying actively engaged in the reading. This is also beneficial in guiding the discussion after the reading, because students can refer back to any information that they have noted in the text through the use of the Post-Its. It is a way for students to help find valuable information in the text without actually altering the text itself, such as with highlighting important aspects of the text.
Procedures
In using Post-Its as a reading strategy, students should be instructed to write summaries, details, important ideas, or interesting information from the text on standard sized or miniature (1.5 x 2 inch) Post-It notes as they read. This helps the students gauge the amount of information that should be included with the main ideas that they find. it is best for the teacher to model how to effectively find main ideas and details relevant to the discussion. It may also be helpful for students to pick out facts they find interesting, explain graphics that helped to understand reading, or share concepts or information they found confusing.
